Free Services to Those Affected by Welfare Reform
Date posted: Tuesday, August 3, 2004
Author: Mark Goldstein

Albanian and other newcomers to Massachusetts who receive welfare can benefit from free programs offered by Jewish Vocational Service (JVS).

Since the end of January, 1999, when Massachusetts Governor A. Paul Cellucci announced stricter reforms to th Commonwealth's welfare system, many have asked where people cut from the rolls can seek assistance. Welfare-to-Work programs operated by local agencies, supported by state and federal funding, provide some free solutions to the employment woes of current and recent welfare recipients.

JVS, a non-profit, non-sectarian organization that has served residents of Greater Boston for 60 years, offers a wider range of these services than most agencies. JVS has fourteen (14) programs that help Boston-area residents find stable employment with opportunities for future growth. These include structured job placement and work search assistance; skills training in accounting, medical and computer skills; education classes in English, literacy and high school equivalency, and business start-up, expansion and lending programs.

Many programs are geared for welfare recipients (or, in some cases, others with low incomes) and refugees. Many help participants access other free assistance with day care, transportation and similar issues. With over $1.3 million in Welfare-to-work services, JVS has the capacity to offer an individually tailored mix of services including job placement coupled with on-the-job training for those whose support has expired or will soon end. Accelerated job placement is available for those with immediate need, while longer-term programs are available for those who have more time to prepare to transition off the welfare rolls.
